Allan P. Smith

“A.P.”

 

February 16, 1921 -  June 24,2004

 

Allan P. Smith of Point Richmond passed away June 24, 2004 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. “A.P.” as he was known to many is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marcelina Batista Smith; sons Allan P. Smith Jr , (wife Maria) of Moraga and Bryan S. Smith of San Francisco; sister Gloria Groff and brothers Bill, Loren, Richard, Dean, and Frank Smith. A.P.  leaves one grandson, Julian Smith, also of Moraga, to cherish his memory.  He was preceded in death by his older brother John Leonard Smith III of Fremont.

 

A.P. was a lifelong resident of the Richmond and Point Richmond areas and graduated from Richmond High School in 1938. He  was also a graduate of the Merchant Marine Officer Training School in Port Hueneme, CA and was a veteran of World War II.  A.P. was employed by Wilson and Kratzer Mortuaries and the Standard Oil Company of California (later Chevron) where he retired after 36 years of service. He subsequently joined the Chevron Retirees Association and participated in the Chevron Tree Planting program for several years.  An active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Point Richmond, A.P. was also a member of the St. Vincent DePaul and Holy Names societies and was also elected to two terms as Grand Knight of the Richmond council of the Knights of Columbus. A.P. belonged to several volunteer maritime organizations including the Steamship Historical Society, Apostleship of the Sea- Seamen’s Center, Jeremiah O’Brien Liberty Ship Memorial and the Red Oak Victory restoration effort where he served on the Board of Directors.  An avid baseball and sports fan, A.P. enjoyed writing sports and historical articles for the local Point Richmond Magazine “This Point in Time” that is published by the Point Richmond Historical Society.

 

Family and friends are invited to attend visitation from 1-8 p.m., Saturday, June 26, 2004 at the Civic Center Chapel  of Wilson and Kratzer Mortuaries, 455 24th Street, Richmond. A Rosary service will be held at 6:00PM, Sunday June 27, 2004 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 301 West Richmond Ave., :Point Richmond. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00PM, Monday, June 28, 2004 at the church. Committal service will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in San Pablo. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society:
